Rumors of a new Samsung phone, the Samsung Huron, broke last week via a tweet from @evleaks. These rumors have now been confirmed based on a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) document that details a Verizon-bound handset similar to the Samsung Galaxy S4.
What the FCC Document Revealed
While there isn’t much information on the phone’s specifications in the FCC document, GSMArena reports that it does show that the Samsung Huron will have Global 3G antennas, Bluetooth, near field communication (NFC), and dual-band Wi-Fi. More importantly, the document confirmed that the Huron, model number SM-W750V, will likely be available to Verizon customers soon. The Windows-based Huron is the first Windows phone from Samsung that Verizon has offered in over a year, according to Pocket-lint, and will carry the Verizon LTE bands and Windows 8.1 OS.
Samsung Huron Similar to Galaxy S4
The @evleaks photo of the Huron that leaked on February 3 shows that the phone will be similar in aesthetics to the Samsung Galaxy S4. If this new Windows phone is similar in other aspects to the S4, expect for it to offer specifications like 2GB RAM, a Quad-Core CPU, a five-inch display with 1080×1920 resolution, and an excellent camera, similar to the S4’s 13 megapixel front camera.
The Huron is expected be officially unveiled at this month’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where Samsung will launch a huge lineup of much-anticipated products. While the Huron is the only phone confirmed as slated for Verizon, GottaBeMobile anticipates that Verizon will also carry the new Samsung S5 which is also expected to launch in Barcelona, along with a new generation of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Phone a Win for Verizon
The Samsung Huron is a much-needed addition to the Verizon catalog, and should have fans of Windows phones excited. There has been a noticeable gap in Verizon’s Windows phone lineup, particularly for high-end models, as the Huron is shaping up to be. The only phone on the Verizon network that can compare to the Huron in terms of specifications is the Nokia ICON 929, also known as the Lumia 929: The ICON 929 will also have a 5-inch display and run on a Snapdragon 800 chip, with 2GB of RAM and a full HD screen. If the Huron carries the same camera as the Galaxy S4, then it will be outclassed by the ICON, which possesses a 20MP PureView camera. The ICON is expected to be released February 19 to Verizon customers.
Would a high-end phone like the Huron make you consider switching carriers?
