The Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to launch soon, and it may have a 5.2-inch 1080p display, reports Bloomberg. Samsung has branded its upcoming Mobile World Congress event “Unpacked 5,” which could very likely feature the unveiling of the latest version of the company’s highly successful Galaxy phone. Set to take place on February 24, anticipation for the launch is already heating up.
Rumored Features
The Samsung Galaxy S5’s larger 5.2-inch display is anticipated to be much sharper than that of its predecessor, the S4. The new flagship phone is also expected to pack an improved battery and camera among other undisclosed features. It is also rumored that the new S5 will be significantly less expensive than the S4 in order to fight competitors’ prices, which have fallen as low as $100 for premium models.
Other expected features include improved integration with the Galaxy Gear wearable device, better security, and possibly an eye scanner. “Samsung studied the possibility of using eye-scanner technology in the new phone for the first time, Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of the mobile business, said in a January 6 interview,” Bloomberg reports. “Sales of the company’s marquee S4 slowed after the September release of the Apple iPhone 5s, which includes a fingerprint-identity sensor.”
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to come loaded with Android KitKat 4.4.2, a cleaner Android version than Jelly Bean 4.3. According to the official Android website, KitKat includes a polished design with improved performance that offers a more interconnected experience than its predecessors. Other new features of the KitKat update include enhancements for the Hangouts app that integrate SMS and MMS with almost any app with messaging features.
Many other features like the launcher and the number pad have also been upgraded to make it easier to place calls thanks to a smarter caller ID. KitKat will be able to pull up local listings of business details from the Maps database when calling unknown numbers. The redesigned Quickoffice also allows users to create and edit documents from anywhere.
The Unpacked Event
Samsung has previously used the Samsung Unpacked event to introduce Galaxy hardware, and released the Galaxy Note 8.0 at its 2013 Mobile World Congress event. For those who won’t be making it to Barcelona this year, Samsung provided a YouTube URL on its Twitter page, which likely means that the event will be streamed live.
