Sony Xperia M2 Aqua Gains IP68 Waterproofing Certification

Sony revealed its new Xperia M2 Aqua will truly live up to its namesake. The device will ship with the highest rated dust- and water-resistance protection.

Sony revealed that its new Xperia M2 Aqua will truly live up to its name, announcing that the device received an IP68 waterproofing certification and will ship with the highest rated dust- and water-resistance protection. “That means the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is completely dust-tight and can survive submersion beyond 1m depth indefinitely,” GSMArena reports.

Xperia M2 Aqua Device Specifications

CNET makes a more specific estimate regarding the M2 Aqua’s capabilities, claiming that the device will be able to survive submersion up to 1.5 meters for a half hour, and its camera button will allow for taking underwater pictures.

Otherwise, Sony’s new Xperia M2 Aqua is virtually the same as the original Xperia M2. They both sport 4.8-inch QHD displays. Like the original M2, the M2 Aqua is also powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor with Adreno 305 GPU for graphics-crunching power. Both devices make use of 8-megapixel cameras with Exmor RS sensors, SteadyShot and HDR stabilization. The Xperia M2 Aqua also runs on a 2300mAh battery and features 8 GB of onboard storage, which is also expandable via an included MicroSD card slot.

International Protection Marking

The days of a few water drops spelling disaster for expensive smartphones are quickly being phased out by strong, water-resistant IP measures and technology. According to DSMT, an International Protect (IP) marking measures water- and dust-proofing against an established standard. The first integer following “IP” ranges from zero to six and denotes the level of dust or particle protection. The second number ranges from zero to nine and indicates warterproofing protection. For context, Sony’s own Xperia Z2 is IP58, which means the device’s internal hardware is safe from most dust particles and can be submerged at a depth beyond 1m.

Incidentally, last week GSMArena published a story stating a Z2 phone was found under 10m of water on an ocean floor, where it rested for six weeks before recovery. The IP58-rated phone still booted up and worked flawlessly. One can only imagine what the M2’s IP68 rating can withstand.

CNET expects the M2 Aqua to launch in the next few weeks in select European, Asian, and Asia Pacific markets.

Is the new IP68 waterproofing certification enough for the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua to grab your attention?
