Huawei, the burgeoning mobile company based in China, is prepping its next phablet for the upcoming IFA tech conference in Berlin. The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the company’s successor to the Ascend Mate 2, an affordable device that balanced off-contract convenience and mid-range specifications. Huawei has teased the new Mate 7 device in images and a YouTube video, which all point to a reveal at next week’s IFA event.
However, keen eyes at GSMArena recently spotted freshly leaked photos of Huawei’s new device early. It features a thin bezel and concave back. The display appears to be as large as the Mate 2 and takes up the majority of the front face, which may easily remind some of the HTC One or One Max.

Interestingly, while the Mate 2 targeted value-minded users looking to circumvent confining carrier subscriptions, the Mate 7 is packed with a feature set closer to the higher-end devices on the market. One of the stand-out improvements is the bump in resolution from 720p to full 1080p. “The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the third generation and while the first two were mid-rangers, this one sits higher up with a six-inch 1080p screen, a 13 MP/1080p camera and a Kirin 920 chipset (octa-core CPU, Mali-T625MP4 GPU). It has a fingerprint scanner on its metal back, a la the HTC One Max.”
The company has also opted for the newer HiSilicon Kirin 920 processor, a departure from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor used in the Ascend Mate 2. GSMArena specs note that this eight-core Kirin 920 chip utilizes four Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7. It features two GB of RAM with a possible three GB option, and will be sold in black, white, and gold.
Only one week remains until IFA begins in September. With any luck, a few more device teases will hit the Internet before the big reveal in Berlin. Until then, what do you think of the new Huawei Ascend Mate 7?
