The Samsung Smart Home program and S Voice will soon speak the same language, as the company announced plans to make these two burgeoning systems compatible with each other. Soon users may be able to command their “smart” appliances with the company’s S Voice service.
Smart Home
When CES kicked off early this year, Samsung revealed its intelligent platform for smart, semi-autonomous home appliances and systems, dubbed “Smart Home.” More will be revealed about the Samsung Smart Home technology at this week’s IFA 2014 conference in Berlin, however SamMobile has word the company is expanding the Smart Home platform to allow support for third-party devices, which could include digital door locks and IP cameras.
“Details are still hazy about the brands which will be using this home automation platform, but we might get a clear idea about that when Samsung releases an SDK later this year during Samsung Developer Conference,” writes Asif S. for SamMobile.
Until then, Samsung has teased a few features that may be demoed at IFA 2014, such as using the Gear’s S Voice to remotely activate home appliances while a user is away. Also, according to SamMobile, Smart Home will be able to tap into geolocation services in a user’s smartphone to determine their proximity from home. This way, for example, the Smart Home system can intelligently preheat the home so it is ready when the user arrives.
Is This the Future?
Shortly after CES 2014 and Samsung’s Smart Home announcement, the company became part of Thread. This collection of companies is aiming to improve connectivity between products and appliances in the home. Members of the group include ARM, Freescale Semiconductor, and others. Smart Home represents a bold step for Samsung and Thread, and IFA 2014 will hopefully tell us a lot more about the platform.
A future with Samsung Smart Home sounds intriguing — are you ready for it?
