The Apple Watch made a big splash when unveiled at Apple’s live event last week, but Android Wear remains undaunted as more companies join in to support the new wearable OS. Most recent of these is HTC, and despite previous rumors that the company had abandoned its smartwatch project, the HTC smartwatch is still in the works. “The Taiwanese smartphone maker is still working on a smartwatch and plans to release it in early 2015,” reports CNET.
Shrouded in Mystery
Not a lot is known about the HTC Smartwatch. It will run Google’s Android Wear operating system for wearables, though CNET says it may use a slightly altered version of the OS for specialized functionality. HTC’s recent mobile offerings took a similar path and garnered significant praise in design and custom UI skins, like with HTC Sense’s BlinkFeed. Ideally, an HTC Smartwatch would benefit from these strengths and show innovation in style and user experience.
Only time will tell more about the device, but it may be a short wait. HTC is planning a “Double Exposure” event on October 8, where the device could make an appearance. According to GSMArena, the company has plans to reveal either its new waterproof camera and/or its new selfie-focused smartphone. However, a smartwatch tease during the October 8 event would be a welcome surprise.
Entering new product markets could help HTC sales growth, as CNET reports the company has seen its shares decline and its new HTC One M8 fail to make a dent in the market. Do you think an HTC smartwatch could get the company back on track?
