It’s been four months since Samsung announced Samsung Z, its Tizen-powered budget smartphone, but details have just recently come to light regarding certain features and specs.
Specifications
According to SamMobile, the low-end device is currently running Tizen version 2.3, though it is possible that the operating system will be updated before the device hits the market. It will feature dual SIM slots and an FM radio. SamMobile notes that these are sought-after features in emerging markets abroad, such as India. The Tizen-powered handset will also sport a low-resolution 3.2-megapixel camera.
SamMobile previously reported that the Samsung Z would be priced at $100 and include a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display capable of pushing 1280 by 720 resolution. The device will be powered by a quad-core 2.3 processor, and SamMobile speculates this will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 system-on-a-chip.
The Samsung Z also has some features in common with the company’s Galaxy S5, including fingerprint and heart rate sensors, as well as an Ultra Power Saving Mode to support the 2600mAh battery. Memory clocks in at 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage space, with a microSD slot for additional storage. It may be a budget device, but Samsung is packing some of the most cutting-edge features found in modern smartphones into the device. The Z connects with the fast LTE-A service, and the device will include near-field communication and infrared sensors.
Stiff Competition
The Samsung Z is an attractive, feature-rich budget device. However, the Tizen OS is facing an uphill battle by taking on established operating systems like iOS and Android. “As Windows Phone and devices like the Nokia Lumia 520 have shown, there is enough space for different players in the budget smartphone market, so it’s not at all surprising it’s the market Samsung has decided to focus on,” SamMobile notes.
The Samsung Z is expected to first launch in India by November of this year. The latest rumors do not point to the possibility that the phone will be released in other countries in the near future.
