LG may be putting its recently acquired webOS operating system to great use very soon. According to The Verge, the company is working on another brand new smartwatch: “A developer website hosted by LG teases a software development kit for a webOS SmartWatch, while the familiar Bean Bird from LG’s webOS TVs also shows up, this time supporting a classically styled analog wristwatch.”
Android Wear and webOS
LG is really cranking out the watches. The LG G Watch is still only a few a months old, yet we’re waiting to catch a closer glimpse of the LG G Watch R, where the LG G Watch’s familiar style is updated with a round face. It’s scheduled to launch before the year ends, and still, the company is back to the drawing board crafting the webOS smartwatch.
As a smartwatch operating system, webOS is a virtual unknown. Thus, specifications and functionality for a webOS-based wearable have yet to be listed. Furthermore, The Verge notes that LG has pulled the aforementioned developer web page following reports of the potential new smartwatch.
Variety Is the Spice of Life
A webOS smartwatch could be a great way for LG to round out its options. The company has both the LG G Watch and the coming G Watch R under Google’s Android Wear operating system. While Android Wear is still in its infancy, it is quickly becoming a crowded market. Emerging operating systems, like Tizen for the Samsung Gear S and now webOS, may provide alternatives that can compete in the growing market.
LG acquired webOS from HP earlier this year after the OS went “open source” back in 2011.
What do you think about webOS being revived for smartwatches?
