It may be on the cutting “edge” of style and sophistication, but the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge has many potential buyers perplexed and uncertain about the durability of the device and its super-slim secondary display. Are these misplaced concerns or plausible apprehension on the part of the wizened technophiles? The official Samsung Electronics blog aims to clear the air, detailing a few must-know aspects and design choices of the Galaxy Note Edge.
Durability
When the Note Edge was announced, the first concern for many users was the durability of the fragile-looking secondary display. However, the company assures, it’s “done more than 1,000 drop tests, not to mention other vigorous durability tests that Samsung is widely recognized for.” The blog goes on to reassure potential buyers that the Note Edge is subject to more durability testing than most of their other devices to simulate the various angles for which it could fall and jeopardize that curved display. Samsung also mentions that the metal frame plays a significant role in keeping the device intact following a drop.
Exposed Screen Sensitivity
The other grievance some naysayers have brought to light is the possibility of inadvertently activating functions via the exposed edge screen. Samsung was already on top of this during research and development for the Note Edge: The edge screen is designed to recognize the difference between a touch from a palm compared to a fingertip. The engineers have also designed the Galaxy Note Edge to recognize intentional gestures versus grip and unintentional touches.
Throwing More Over the Edge
Samsung has worked hard to make the edge screen more than an eye-catching gimmick. Users gain quicker access to their apps, tools, and settings, and the edge screen displays notifications, weather, and more for easy, at-a-glance awareness. The company has also officially released the software development kit, so users can expect to see a wide variety of added functionality, apps, and more, all specifically designed to take advantage of the Galaxy Note Edge’s groundbreaking screen.
The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge features much of the same cutting-edge functions found on the Galaxy Note 4, including the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display capable of 2560 x 1440 HD resolution, 2.7-GHz quad-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, microSD card slots, and 32 GB of onboard storage space.
