Android 5.0 Smart Lock for Chromebooks Is Almost Ready

Smart Lock, one of the more sought-after features of Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, is also heading to Chromebook laptops in the near future.

Smart Lock, one of the more sought-after features of Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, will also be included on Chromebook laptop computers in the near future, according to TechnoBuffalo.

But What Is It?

The feature allows users to pair Bluetooth-enabled devices such as wearables, tablets, and even automobiles with their smartphones, and Chromebooks will soon join the mix. Upon pairing the devices, users will be able to unlock their Chromebook remotely and without a password by simply clicking a green box on their smart device’s screen. If the paired device is beyond the 100-foot range Google has set, then users will be required to input their password.

Setting It Up

When it officially launches, users will be able to set up Smart Lock from within the Chrome OS settings. Once there, the new Material Design-infused guide will offer step-by-step instructions to help users find and sync a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone to their Chromebook. Then, they simply need to accept the terms of service and enjoy a new form of security.

Early Access

At the Google I/O developer’s conference over the summer, Google demoed the feature on its Chromebooks. But when Lollipop began rolling out to smartphones this fall, Smart Lock was not quite ready to work with the company’s Chromebook computers. That is about to change. Eager users with the Dev Channel of Chrome OS can beta test Smart Lock for their Chromebook right now, even though it is not enabled by default. Just remember, the Dev channel is not meant for general consumers. Untrained use could render the system unstable.

Will you be using Smart Lock on your Chromebook?
