Kogan has released the Agora 4G Android smartphone, the latest low-cost entry to the Android market aimed at budget-minded customers. Kogan may not be widely known to those in the United States, but the company is Australia’s largest online retailer of electronics, appliances, fitness equipment, and more.
Kogan sidesteps carriers to make Android phones directly available internationally to users through their well-established online retail storefront. The Kogan Agora 4G is the only currently available Android smartphone for under $220. Gizomodo Australia reports, “If you want a great 4G phone with mid-market specs at a small price, look no further than the brand new Agora.” Here’s what to expect:
Features
The Agora 4G features many of the high-end bells and whistles users would hope to see from a more expensive device. Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS comes pre-installed, and the network support includes 2G, 3G and 4G LTE Cat 4. Storage capacity is on the thin side, at eight GB compared to the 32 GB storage standard most US users have become accustomed to, but the capacity can be expanded with a MicroSD card.
The phone is powered by 1.2 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon Quad Core processor with Adreno 320 GPU for graphics and an IPS panel type for the five-inch, 720p HD display. The shooter on the front is a 1.3 MP camera and an eight MP clicker is on the rear. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 and WLAN802.11 b/g/n and a built-in FM receiver. To round out the more mid-to-high end feature set, the 2500mAh battery can reportedly withstand a full day of heavy use before requiring a charge.
A Worthy Mid-Range Contender
The Huawei Ascend Mate 2 was the most recent entry into the low-cost Android device market after the Moto E. Each offers a very similar collection of high- and mid-range specs. While 720p is considered HD, it is also old tech by today’s market standards. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the last premium devices to feature the reduced resolution, which is now primarily found on budget-friendly smartphones for consumers who demand function over early adoption.
